WELCOME TO THE BO-EX EXPEDITION
It’s great to see you’re interested in our expedition. Here you’ll find all the important information you need to get to know the journey at your own pace, prepare thoroughly and clarify any questions before booking.
We have gathered all the important information here so that you can get to know the journey in detail and prepare for it thoroughly.
THE EXPEDITION PHILOSOPHY
BO-EX was deliberately designed to offer a different way of travelling.
Each expedition takes place in an extremely small group of no more than four guests. This creates a much more personal, flexible and human experience than a conventional group tour.
The rhythm of the journey, decisions and many experiences along the way can be adapted to the group and the actual conditions on the ground.

FLEXIBILITY AS PART OF THE JOURNEY
Although there is a planned route and a clear structure, the expedition is designed to allow adjustments before or during the journey when necessary.
In Bolivia, particularly in the Altiplano and in remote highland regions, conditions can change quickly. For this reason, we always work with different route options and alternatives.
Some factors that may influence the course of the journey:
- Weather conditions
- Condition of routes or remote roads
- Water or river crossings
- Access to national parks or certain regions
- Interests and energy levels of the group
- Availability of accommodation
This flexibility is a deliberate part of the expedition concept. It allows us to respond to the actual conditions on the ground and adapt the journey accordingly.
THE VALUE OF THE UNEXPECTED
BO EX does not try to control every moment of the journey in advance, as is common with traditional package tours.
Many of the most unforgettable moments only emerge during the expedition itself:
- Places that were not originally planned
- Spontaneous route changes
- Cultural encounters
- Unexpected landscapes
- Wildlife
- Unique conditions that cannot be planned
Part of the experience is precisely about leaving room for the journey to take its own course.
WHAT THIS EXPEDITION IS ABOUT
This journey was designed to bring together different elements:
- Extreme and remote landscapes
- Nature on a grand scale
- Culture and genuine encounters
- Wildlife
- Moderate and voluntary adventures
- Moments of silence and disconnection
The goal is not to work through a tourist checklist.
The goal is to experience Bolivia in a more authentic, deeper and more human way, with room for the unexpected and for the special moments that only emerge along the way.
01. YOUR BO-EX GUIDE
MEET MATHEY
Multilingual Swiss guide (DE, EN, FR, ES, HR)
Welcome, I’m Mathey.
Born and raised in Zurich, I dreamed of discovering the world from an early age. My secret dream job was to become an astronaut. Not because of the fame or heroism, but because of the unique way of travelling it would offer. And, of course, because of the view of our Earth from above.
Instead, I became an engineer and later worked as a project manager in the aviation industry. At 24, after a period of working more than 70 hours a week, I asked myself a simple question: “Is this really my life?”
I decided to take a different path. A 17-month journey around the world became the beginning of a life in which travelling became increasingly important. If I could not leave Earth, I wanted to get to know it properly.
Since then, this has grown into more than ten years of independent travel and well over 100 countries visited. Along the way, I have not only discovered many places, but also learned that travelling means much more to me than visiting sights. It is about understanding other cultures and ways of life, gaining new perspectives and truly experiencing the world.
Of all the countries I have travelled through, Bolivia eventually stopped being just another destination. It became something special. Its vastness, landscapes, people and the possibility of living a simpler and more conscious life ultimately convinced me to stay.
Today, Bolivia is no longer a destination. It is my base.
With BO-EX, I want to share this personal connection to Bolivia and create an expedition that offers more than traditional tourist routes: remote landscapes, genuine encounters, adventure and the feeling of stepping outside the familiar world for a while.

EXPEDITION GUIDE
Throughout the expedition, you will be accompanied by a personal BO-EX guide. The guide coordinates the daily schedule, takes care of the organisational and logistical aspects of the journey and is your main point of contact throughout the expedition.
Among other things, the guide is responsible for:
- Coordinating the daily travel schedule
- Organising accommodation and activities
- Communicating with local partners and providers
- Adjusting the route when conditions require it
- Supporting you with questions or individual requests
- Handling unforeseen situations during the expedition
Personal guidance does not mean that you have to spend all your time as part of a guided group. Especially in cities, there is deliberately free time. You can use this time as you wish, discover restaurants on your own or choose to be accompanied by the BO-EX guide. This allows every guest to find their own rhythm.
For communication during the journey, each guest receives a local SIM card. In areas with mobile coverage, the BO-EX guide can therefore also be reached by phone outside of the shared activities, particularly if support is needed.
In remote regions, however, the BO-EX guide remains closely connected to the group. Mobile coverage is not always available in these areas. Weather, road conditions and other local circumstances may require adjustments at any time. In such situations, the guide assesses the options available on site and decides how the expedition can be continued safely and appropriately.
Safety is also a priority during shorter activities away from the vehicle. If the group splits up for short explorations or walks, radios can be provided for communication when needed.
The aim is to provide a balanced combination of personal support, safety and freedom. You should always know that someone is there when you need support, while still having enough space to experience the journey in your own way.
LOCAL GUIDES AND SPECIALISTS
For certain activities, BO-EX works with local guides and specialists. They bring specific expertise, regional experience and, where required, the necessary local qualifications.
These include, for example:
- Guided visits to historical or active mines
- Mountain ascents and high altitude activities
- Horseback riding or buggy excursions
- Other activities where local expertise is required
Working with these specialists allows for a more authentic and knowledgeable experience and gives you access to people who know their region and its particularities firsthand.
Depending on the activity and local availability, these experiences are conducted in English or Spanish. For historical or cultural activities, an English speaking guide is used whenever possible. For more technical or practical activities, particularly in remote regions, the guide may speak Spanish only.
In many remote regions of Bolivia, there are simply no local specialists who speak additional foreign languages. This reality is also part of travelling through some of the country’s least developed and most remote regions, and forms part of the authentic character of the expedition.
Whenever an activity requires specific knowledge, practical experience or compliance with local regulations, BO-EX works with appropriate local specialists.
